Manipulated conference

Research and Creation
(work in progress)

Manipulated conference is a performance conference which brings the perception of puppetry in contemporary theatre at its centre. Or maybe this is not what it does.

A speaker presents her thesis on the potential of contemporary puppetry to an audience, aiming to break down its pre-existing prejudices. She knows how to manipulate puppets, and also how to convince an audience, but what is pushing her to do it? An unexpected circumstance will force her to confront her own contradictions.

What would be the most loving way to honour a genre? By claiming the importance of its origins? O reinventing it so that it adapts to the new times? What if what we really care about in all this are not the puppets?

This show is the result of the previous research that the director carried on the legacy of puppetry within contemporary theatre. Through its staging, this project shows some of the power dynamics which have conditioned how both artists and audiences have perceived puppetry throughout history.
